Hike Mountains to Sea Trail to Rattlesnake Lodge

May 27th, 2012 by Honey Hill

Rattlesnake Lodge was a summer home of Asheville physician Chase P Ambler and a retreat until it was destroyed by fire in 1926. Today the stone foundation remains, as well as remnants of other artifacts like the outline of an in-ground pool.

Dogs are welcome, but must be on a 6 foot leash.

The hike to Rattlesnake Lodge about 2.8 miles round trip from Ox Creek Rd.

Directions from Honey Hill Inn and Cabins

Take I-40 east to I-240 (toward Asheville). Take Exit 4A, US 19/23 north, toward Weaverville. Drive 6 miles and take exit 21/New Stock Rd. At the end of the ramp, turn right and immediately turn left. Drive 8/10 mile. At the stoplight, turn right onto Reems Creek Rd. Drive 4 miles and turn right onto Ox Creek Rd. Go 3.7 miles and arrive at the parking lot (on left).

The Hike

From the parking lot, follow the trail for a short distance to where it intersects with the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Turn left on the trail and start up the switchbacks for 1.4 miles to the lodge site.

DuPont State Forest Waterfalls

June 3rd, 2011 by Honey Hill

Gretchen and I don’t get out very often, but this year we decided to take the Tour de Falls, hosted by the Friends of the Dupont State Forest. The Tour de Falls is held twice a year, in May and September. It is a great way to see the waterfalls in a short amount of time. We saw three waterfalls and a lake in the forest, all by bus with the assistance of a tour guide. Visitors on the tour can hop off the bus and visit each waterfall at their leisure. When you are ready, you can get on the next bus and go on the the next waterfall.

Of course we had our camera handy!

This is Gretchen at High Falls.
